Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is a vibrant and lively city that's a pleasure to visit. Its many districts, spread across the archipelago's 14 islands, offer diverse lifestyles, from trendy streets to laid-back areas. But what to do when night falls? Don't go to bed! Stockholm's nightlife is fun and very lively. Shall we take you for an evening stroll in Stockholm?

The Södermalm district at night

You're now in the city's most popular and laid- back neighborhood, a favorite among young people. Stroll through the narrow streets and soak up the nighttime rhythm where lights and music blend together, creating a trendy atmosphere in this renowned area. A few places worth remembering include:

  • Trädgarden, one of the best open-air nightclubs for a wild night of dancing on Hammarby Slussväg street.
  • Himlen, a dizzying address where you can drink a good cocktail from the top of its 25 floors on Götgatan avenue, the unmissable rooftop of Södermalm.
  • The Ugglan, a mix of various games and a beer bar on Närkesgatan. With a bowling green, good hops and delicious tapas, an evening out is always a success.

The Östermalm district in the evening

Östermalm is the city's wealthy and elegant district, a favorite haunt of Swedish royalty. This surely explains all the excellent (though admittedly pricey) spots you can find as soon as night falls, when the music starts pumping and the dance floors fill up. But before you get into the groove, we're taking you on a 3-hour dinner cruise through the Stockholm archipelago. Admire the illuminated streets and soft lighting while enjoying a delicious meal to the gentle rhythm of the steamboat along the quays. Afterward, you'll have plenty of time to visit some must-see spots :

  • Hell's Kitchen, a very popular nightclub known for its attentive service and varied decor, offers you a special evening in Sturegatan.
  • Sturecompagniet, Stockholm's largest club, spans 4 rooms and 2 levels, each with its own style of music, in an elegant building on Sturegatan.
  • Bar 101 and the rooftop terrace bar, frequented mainly by locals for its happy hours and good champagne served on the rooftop terrace.

Explore the neighborhood streets to soak up the atmosphere of the restaurants and bars open in the evenings. If you find a place you like, we recommend dressing appropriately for entry.

The Gamla Stan district at nightfall

It's surely one of the most pleasant neighborhoods for a leisurely evening stroll. With its traditional pubs, cobblestone streets, and charming buildings, Stockholm's Old Town offers a perfect setting for nighttime getaways. That said, things can get more lively with a guided tour into the haunted history of Gamla Stan. For 90 minutes, follow a guide through lantern-lit alleyways, listening to tales of murders and unsolved mysteries. Beware of Stockholm's ghosts—they're sure to give you goosebumps! After all that excitement, come back down to earth at some of the neighborhood's must-see spots :

  • The Pharmarium, the best cocktail bar in town, is located on the cobblestones of Stortoget. A former pharmacy converted into a festive venue, it retains its old-world decor and atmosphere, complete with a medicine cabinet and labels in Latin.
  • Mama Mia, a restaurant enlivened by the songs of ABBA, a unique theatrical culinary experience on Lilla Allmänna Gränd street.
  • Tweed, a stylish and elegant bar with comfortable leather armchairs to enjoy good cocktails in a subdued atmosphere on Lyla Nygatan Street.

Spend a lovely evening in a relaxed area of Gamla Stan.

The Norrmalm district is very lively during the day with wide shopping avenues. Mostly pedestrianized, it's pleasant to explore at night, especially with a guide for a narrated tour. Starting from Vasagatan, wander according to your interests while listening to the history of the region recounted with passion. Allow 3 hours for a personalized itinerary with two stops at renowned local bars. Many places in Norrmalm are worth a visit:

  • The Icebar, an exceptional and icy place where everything is made of… ice! Enjoy a refreshing cocktail in Vasaplan.
  • The rooftop Garden, a 100% relaxation address with a wellness center and an orangery perched high above the rooftops of Vasaplan.
  • The Royal Stockholm Opera House, ideal for enjoying a show or ballet in a historic building on Gustav Adolfs torg street.

The evening will be relaxed in the streets of Norrmalm, a neighborhood with a zen atmosphere loved by tourists midweek.

Walking around Stockholm at night: what you need to know

The Swedish pace of life is different from ours, which can be surprising when you arrive in Stockholm. At 11 a.m., it's not brunch, but lunch, while 6 p.m. marks dinnertime, not afternoon tea. It's worth noting that Swedes love to snack throughout the day and eat early, which isn't typical for us. Be careful if you're planning to eat out in the evening; the doors close at 9 p.m. ! And if you're looking for a lively atmosphere, Thursday night is the time to go out, when young people love to party and have fun. You can walk around safely in the central neighborhoods of Stockholm ; it's mainly the outlying areas that are best avoided (Järva or Huddinge, for example). You can also take the metro without worry, but be mindful of the schedule: it runs until 1 a.m. on weekdays and 3 a.m. on weekends. That said, it's also the time when the clubs close their doors, prompting partying Swedes to go to bed.

Here is all the advice you need to know to get around Stockholm.

No need for a map or guidebook, you now know all the best spots and ideas for evening strolls in Stockholm. Look everywhere and visit all the neighborhoods; they are magnificent in the evening.
