Open-air markets, a regular event not to be missed

The smells, the colors, the relaxed atmosphere, the market is most often synonymous with a good time. In a country where the coffee break is called fika, with conviviality and sharing around a hot drink and a cinnamon brioche cake being the watchwords, the markets have a very particular appeal. Take your basket to tour some addresses in Stockholm :

  • The Old Heymarket, in the central district of Norrmalm , takes place every week on the friendly little square of Hötorget. Not very extensive, it offers all kinds of products as well as culinary specialties to taste.
  • The Östermalm Farmers' Market, a meeting of producers in spring and autumn on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Here, only quality, fresh and local products in the form of jams, honey, vegetables, fish, meats and oils.
  • The Bondens Egen, open between October and December in Södermalm, has the particularity of offering products manufactured less than 250 km from Stockholm, a guarantee of quality and short circuit. Every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., find various vegetables such as giant gherkins adored by the Swedes, corn on the cob, meat and fish.
  • The Hornstull market takes place every weekend from April to September in Söderman and brings together second-hand dealers, food trucks, music, games and a good atmosphere. Spend some time at this lively meeting place.

The markets under the halls in the city of Stockholm

Walking under the market is pleasant all year round to stock up on provisions sheltered from the bad weather. Most often, bars and restaurants line the walkways for a quick meal or a mid-morning coffee. Prepare your taste buds, let's head to the markets:

  • The Östermalm market is a must, the most famous and most anticipated market for Stockholmers, but also for tourists who visit an institution dating from 1880. In a red brick iron building with a glass roof, the stands are colored and scented with regional specialties every day of the week and even on weekends. Go there with your eyes closed, it's a spectacle not to be missed.
  • Hötorgshallen or the Hötorget market halls, a pretty square in the Norrmalm district where a food market and flea market alternate throughout the year. Let yourself be tempted by fresh products or objects to recycle.
  • Söderhallarna in Södermalm is a temple for the taste buds where you can wander the aisles, but also eat. Meat, fish, bread, fruit and vegetables, all products are renowned for their quality.
