It's often overlooked, but Stockholm, this "ice star of the north," actually enjoys a temperate climate, very pleasant during the summer. This archipelago is nicknamed the "Venice of the North" and offers numerous opportunities for water sports and activities. We've compiled a list of the best spots for swimming in Stockholm during the warmer months.

Dip your feet in Lake Brunnsviken

North of the city, escape to calmer shores, far from the urban bustle. In Solna, the magnificent Haga Park (Hagaparken) stretches majestically along the shores of Lake Brunnsviken. This large freshwater lake offers an ideal and refreshing alternative to swimming in the sea, particularly at the fine sandy beach of Brunnsviksbadet or from the smooth rocks that border the park. It's the perfect place to combine the pleasures of the water with a rejuvenating walk in nature, amidst ancient trees and historic royal pavilions.

Canoeing on the Baltic Sea around the island of Skeppsholmen

If you dream of paddling in Sweden, Skeppsholmen Island offers the most central spot, just a stone's throw from the Old Town (Gamla Stan). Paddling here offers a spectacular panorama of Stockholm's architecture from the water.

However, maritime traffic is particularly heavy (ferries, cruise ships, shuttle boats) and the currents can create surprisingly large waves. This site is therefore best avoided by beginners, children, or those seeking leisurely paddling. On the other hand, it is highly recommended for experienced athletes and kayakers looking for a dynamic outing and a unique perspective of the capital.

Kayaking from Kungsholmen Island

Located in the western part of the city, Kungsholmen Island offers two completely different sailing experiences.

  • In the north of the island, the Karlbergskanalen canal has calm and sheltered waters, bordered by greenery, ideal for a peaceful and bucolic kayak trip.
  • However, as soon as you cross over to the south shore, facing Lake Mälaren and the access routes to the Baltic Sea, the scenery changes dramatically: here you find the main ferry route, subject to the currents and waves of heavy maritime traffic. This southern sector is therefore a technical spot, reserved for experienced athletes and kayakers looking for a more intense challenge close to the water.

The Djurgårdsbrunnskanalen canal, which winds through the island park of Djurgården, is a true haven of peace, ideal for a relaxing family outing. As you cruise along its calm waters, glide through an exceptional green setting, designated the world's first urban national park. If you're looking for an unusual outing after a shopping spree in the trendy Södermalm district, head to the charming island of Reimersholme. To match the laid-back, hip vibe of the locals, swap your canoe for a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) or a windsurf board. Surrounded by vast green spaces and coastal paths, this spot is ideal for relaxing by the water and gives the surprising feeling of being miles away from the capital, even though the city center is just a stone's throw away.
